Improvisational Spirit & Rootsy Soul

Blending improvisational spirit with rootsy soul, The Hidden Trax delivers a fresh, dynamic take on the classic bar band — bringing depth, groove, and jam-band energy

About the Band

Typewriter with a handwritten letter inserted and a person's hand typing, surrounded by a cup of coffee, a glass of whiskey, and a small bottle on a wooden desk.

Three old friends from high school reconnected decades later when they were asked to play their class reunion—just for fun. That one night sparked something bigger. What started as a nostalgic jam turned into a full-fledged band with a mission: to bring life to the songs people love but aren’t tired of hearing.

After touring as Affordable Butter over the summer, Jeff and Nick crossed paths online through their shared love of Phish and all things improvisational. A few jam sessions later, Steve and Mark joined in, and the sound clicked.

Now, as The Hidden Trax, they dig into the deep cuts—music from great artists that doesn’t always make the greatest-hits list but still deserves to be played loud. We lean into the improvisational tradition — reworking songs from artists like the Allman Brothers, Phish, and The Band into fresh, extended versions that move with the room.

Mark has been a freelance drummer for over thirty years playing throughout New England in a variety of settings covering different genres including jazz, rock and theater. In addition to The Hidden Trax, he has recently performed with 2Slick, the Bay State Jazz Quintet, and Itchy Feet.

Jeff Kushmerek is a guitarist whose sound is built on feel, intuition, and decades of listening deeply — always chasing the tones he hears in his head. Growing up in the Boston area, Jeff was shaped by the thunder and melody of Van Halen and Led Zeppelin, artists that defined his early sense of what the guitar could do. His first Van Halen concert in the '80s — chauffeured by none other than bassist Steve Gleason — lit the fuse.

Over time, Jeff’s playing has evolved into something both rooted and fluid. He leans into groove, phrasing, and dynamic contrast, with a tone-first approach that supports the band’s improvisational flow. His style thrives in the spaces between structure and spontaneity — weaving rock, jam, and soul with a deliberate ear for what the moment calls for.

Nick Smith is a guitarist and singer from Wayland, MA. Though he grew up playing multiple instruments, he found his passion for guitar in young adulthood. During his four years living in Vermont for college, he became entrenched in the region’s rich legacy of jam bands. After studying jazz and improvisational music under guitarist Paul Asbell and educator Dick Forman, Smith returned to the Boston area, where he combines these influences with rock, blues, and experimental sounds to deliver a powerful and compelling performance.

Notable influences include Trey Anastasio, John Mayer, and Derek Trucks.

One of the band's most notable members is American bass player Steven Gleason. Known for his work in the tribute circuit, Steve is a founding member of the highly regarded Fleetwood Mac and Heart tribute band Fleetwood Heart, where he continues to perform. Before that, he was a founding member of the acclaimed Black Crowes tribute band, the Americans.

Steve's vision and extensive stage experience, including performances at prestigious venues like Daryl's House and The Stone Church, are integral to the new band's sound and live presence.
